My husband and I will have 14 days to spend in your lovely country, we want to visit Israel, Petra, the Dead sea and any other suggestions I might get. Are the top attractions in Israel paid or it is just walking around the city? Are hostels expensive, or just in really touristic places? how much would I spend on transport and food? (backpacker budget)
Thanks a lot |

Depends on where you want to go and what you want to do...
Lots of things to see for free all over. The Old City in Jerusalem is a marvelous few days just walking around (have a good guide book with you).
Nature trails by the gazillions, especially in the north of the country.
OTOH Museums are expensive. Food in restaurants is a killer. Be prepared to buy the makings at supermarkets and small food shops and prepare for yourself. You can get good meals for cheap at felafel stands and shwarma places.
If you want to go to the movies or clubs, discos be prepared for *expensive*.
The Dead Sea beaches in Ein Gedi and in Ein Boqeq are free. If you want to sleep over you can either camp on the beach (not legal but everyone does it anyway) or stay in a hostel.
Bus fares are not too bad. If you will be in one city for some days always buy the multiple trip ticket. They are not transferable from one city to another.
Let us know what your interests are and we can be more specific with recommendations.
Welcome and have fun! |

One correction: I was able to use Egged's 10-ride multiple bus ticket both in Jerusalem and Haifa (I didn't try it anywhere else). |

Oh and more thing! I have searched the forums and can't find anything on dressing appropriately for the mosques, churches, etc. that our tour group will visit in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and other places in Israel. Is there a guideline for men and women? Is a calf-length skirt long enough? Should we plan on long sleeves or just when in the churches, etc?
(We leave in one week) |

Dear Olivia,
I presume you are catholic, as far as I know all holy places in Jerusalem are free of charge. For example you cannot expect to be charged for walking at the "via dolorosa"...:o)
Dress Code.
Usually it is common to cover the shoulders up to the elbows. a simple scarf os shall will do the job nicely, no need to cover the face etc.
I am not sure if woman are even allowed to walk into mosques but as far as the synagogues i know it is allowed. So, answer
Transport and food are not very cheap, cheapest transport will be by bus the train is a little more expensive and also does not get you to all places
I will be more then glad to give you any additional answers from my knowledge even though i am not a travel guide or anything.
my email is: zvikavm@gmail.com and my MSN is zvikavanmoppes@hotmail.com
Have a nice evening
